True & Turbo Air Cooler Error Codes: E1, E2, HI & LO — What They Mean

Most reach-in coolers in Denver kitchens — True, Turbo Air, and the rest — run on a small digital controller, and when something drifts out of spec, that controller starts talking: E1, E2, HI, LO, or just a temperature display that’s blinking at you. Unlike a home fridge, a commercial box carries a day of inventory and a health-inspection risk, so these codes deserve a faster response than “let’s see if it sorts itself out.” Here’s what they actually mean.

E1 / E2 (and P1/P2 on some controllers) — probe errors

The controller has lost a temperature sensor: E1 is typically the cabinet (air) probe, E2 the evaporator (defrost) probe. On Turbo Air units you’ll often see the same faults as P-codes. A cooler can limp along with a dead probe — the controller falls back to timed cycles — but it’s guessing instead of measuring: temperatures swing wider, defrosts fire blind, and product sits closer to the danger zone than the display admits. Probes are inexpensive, defined parts; the diagnosis is confirming it’s the probe and not the wiring or the controller input.

HI / LO — temperature alarms

These aren’t component codes — they’re the controller telling you the box is out of range right now. A HI alarm after a delivery or a door left open can be innocent; a HI alarm that returns every afternoon means something real: a condenser coil packed with kitchen grease, a failing evaporator fan, a defrost problem icing the coil, or a refrigerant leak. Treat a repeating HI the way you’d treat smoke: the cause is upstream, and every hour it runs warm is inventory risk. (A LO alarm freezing your produce is usually a stuck relay, a bad probe, or a controller setpoint issue — also a real repair, cheaper than a nightly loss of product.)

dEF stuck on the display — defrost faults

Seeing dEF during a defrost cycle is normal. A display that lives in dEF, or a coil that ices into a block anyway, points to a failed defrost heater, a bad termination sensor, or a controller stuck mid-sequence — the same family of faults we covered on the walk-in side, scaled down to a reach-in.

Why commercial codes aren’t a reset-and-go fix

Power-cycling a reach-in clears the display and restarts the compressor — and if the underlying fault is still there, you’ve just muted the alarm while the product keeps warming. Commercial controllers are also configurable: a well-meaning “adjustment” to setpoints or defrost schedules can hide a mechanical fault until it becomes a compressor replacement. The honest path is boring: read the code, test the part it names, verify airflow and refrigerant, and put the controller back to factory-correct settings.

Repair or replace?

Reach-ins are workhorses and almost always worth repairing: probes, fans, defrost heaters, and controllers are all defined parts at a fraction of a new unit. The conversation changes only when the compressor is gone on an old box that was undersized for the job to begin with — and if that’s your situation, we’ll say so plainly instead of selling you a repair that won’t hold.

My True cooler shows E1 but still feels cold. Can it wait until next week?

It’s running on a fallback program, not on measurement — which means wider temperature swings than the display suggests. In a home fridge that’s an inconvenience; in a box that has to hold 41°F for the health inspector, it’s a gamble. Probe replacements are quick and inexpensive; waiting is the expensive version.

The HI alarm goes away when I restart the cooler. Fixed?

Muted, not fixed. A restart clears the alarm memory while the cause — usually a dirty condenser, a fan, icing, or low refrigerant — keeps working against you. If HI comes back within a day or two, stop restarting and get it diagnosed before it becomes a compressor.

Do you service brands other than True and Turbo Air?
