Whirlpool refrigerators don’t have one universal code list — what you see depends on the model family — but a handful of displays account for most of the service calls we run in Denver. Here’s what the common ones actually mean, which are urgent, and which one is the machine quietly telling you it lost power while you were away.
PO — power outage
The gentlest code on the list: the fridge lost power at some point and wants you to know. Confirm the food is still cold, press the confirm/measured-fill button per your model to clear it, and move on. The only time PO matters is when it keeps appearing without any outage — that pattern points to a loose power connection or a failing control board, and it’s worth a look before it becomes a warm fridge on a workday.
E1 / E2 / E3 — thermistor and sensor faults
On many Whirlpool families these are sensor errors: the control board has lost a temperature reading from the fresh-food or freezer side. Like every modern refrigerator, a Whirlpool without a working sensor falls back to guesswork — it keeps running, but temperatures drift wider than the display admits. Sensors are inexpensive, defined parts; the real work is confirming it’s the sensor rather than the wiring or the board input reading it.
A blinking temperature display or flashing lights
Whirlpool’s most common “code” isn’t alphanumeric at all: the temp display blinks, or the interior lights flash, and the fridge won’t settle. Depending on the model this signals a door left ajar long enough to trip the alarm, a failed door switch, or a communication fault between the boards. If closing the door firmly doesn’t clear it within a few minutes, stop experimenting — a board-communication fault diagnosed early is a component repair; ignored, it can take the compressor control down with it.
The freezer is fine but the fridge is warm — with no code at all
The classic Whirlpool complaint, and usually not a code in sight. One evaporator serves both compartments on most models, and a failed evaporator fan, iced-over coil, or stuck damper stops cold air from reaching the fresh-food side. We’ve covered the diagnosis path in our fridge-not-cooling guide — and if the compressor itself is struggling, that’s sealed-system territory, which is exactly the call where an honest repair-or-replace answer matters most.
Why a returning code isn’t a reset-and-go fix
Unplugging the fridge clears the display, not the fault — the same rule we’ve written about for LG’s rF code holds here. A code that returns is a component telling you it failed, and a refrigerator is the one appliance where waiting has a daily cost: spoiled food, and a compressor working overtime against a problem upstream of it.
Repair or replace?
Sensors, fans, door switches, dampers, and even control boards are defined, replaceable parts — on a Whirlpool that’s otherwise healthy, repair wins comfortably. The math changes only when a sealed-system failure meets an old, entry-level box; if that’s what we find, we’ll tell you plainly and put the numbers side by side.

Whirlpool refrigerator error codes — FAQ
PO keeps coming back but we haven’t had an outage. What is it?
A repeating PO without a real outage usually means the fridge is losing power briefly — a loose plug or outlet, a worn power cord connection, or a control board browning out. It’s a quick diagnosis, and it’s worth doing: the next “brief” power loss might be the one that lasts all weekend.
My Whirlpool’s display is blinking but the fridge seems cold. Urgent?
Cold today doesn’t mean stable. A blinking display is the control system flagging a fault it can’t resolve — door circuit, sensor, or board communication. If it doesn’t clear after the door is firmly closed for a few minutes, have it diagnosed while it’s still a small repair.
Do the same codes apply to my Maytag or KitchenAid fridge?
Often yes — Whirlpool builds Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana refrigerators on shared platforms, so the fault families overlap heavily. Give us the brand, the code, and the model number, and we’ll map it to the right diagnosis path.
How soon can you come out?
We run refrigerator calls across the Denver Metro throughout the week, and warm-fridge calls get priority — food doesn’t wait. Call or book online and we’ll get you the soonest available window.
