Whirlpool dryers report trouble with short codes on the display — and like the washer F&E system they share a platform with, each code names a symptom, not a part. Here is how we read the common ones on Denver Metro service calls.
AF — airflow restriction
The dryer measured weak exhaust airflow. Nine times out of ten this is the vent: lint packed into the duct, a crushed transition hose behind the machine, or a frozen-shut exterior flap in winter. AF is the code to take literally — restricted airflow stretches dry times, blows thermal fuses, and is the leading factor in dryer fires. Clean the lint screen, then have the duct actually measured; if AF returns, the blockage is deeper than a screen.
PF — power failure during a cycle
The dryer lost power mid-cycle and wants you to know. After a storm or a Denver brownout it is informational — restart and move on. PF appearing repeatedly with no outage points at a loose cord connection, a tired outlet, or a breaker on its way out: an electrical symptom worth taking seriously before it becomes a no-start.
F01 — main control fault
The control board reported an internal error. A power cycle sometimes clears a one-off glitch; an F01 that returns usually means the board itself. Before buying one, the honest step is verifying it is not a harness or a stuck relay elsewhere — boards are the most-misdiagnosed part on this platform.
No code, long dry times — the silent AF

FAQ
Can I keep drying with an AF code?
You can, but you shouldn’t for long – restricted airflow overheats the machine, kills heating parts early, and is the top factor in dryer fires. Get the duct cleaned first.
Does PF mean my dryer is broken?
Not by itself – it records a power interruption. If it appears without an outage, have the cord, outlet and breaker checked before it becomes a machine that won’t start.
Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore – same codes?
Largely yes: Maytag and many Kenmore dryers are built on Whirlpool’s platform, so AF, PF and the F-series carry over between brands.
