Dryer Stops Mid-Cycle: How It Stops Tells You Why

A dryer that quits partway through a load is rarely random. How it stops points to the circuit that cut it off, and most of those circuits are safeties doing their job. Here is how the manufacturers’ service manuals sort it out, and what is safe to check before you call.

Start with how it stops

What you notice Likely cause
Stops after a stretch of heat, restarts once cool Overheating, usually restricted airflow
Stops, often with big loads, runs again after a rest The motor’s thermal protector
Stopped and now will not start at all A one-time thermal fuse on some models
Stops when the door is bumped Door switch, latch or wiring
Ends early, clothes still damp Moisture sensing
Gas dryer: drum turns, flame goes out Normal cycling, venting or the gas valve

1. It stops after a stretch of heat and restarts once it cools

Heat safeties depend on airflow: a GE service sheet calls proper airflow essential for normal operation of the temperature control and safety systems. On GE’s laundry centers, a tripped high-limit thermostat interrupts the motor as well as the heater, then resets itself as it cools. LG’s DLEX5680 electric dryer wires an automatic-reset thermostat on the blower housing into the motor circuit, so drum, fan and heat stop together. LG’s Flow Sense warns first: d75 to d95 mean the duct is roughly 75 to 95 percent blocked, and LG says not to use the dryer until the exhaust is cleaned or repaired.

Other safeties are one-time parts. Whirlpool’s technical manual for its 7.4 and 8.8 cubic-foot Whirlpool and Maytag dryers puts a thermal fuse in series with the drive motor on electric and 27-inch gas models; once it opens, the dryer stays dead — see dryer won’t start. Whirlpool then replaces the thermal cut-off and high-limit too, and checks for a blocked or improper exhaust.

2. It stops, often with big loads, and runs again after a rest

The drive motor has its own protector; GE describes its version as automatic-reset and built into the motor. Frigidaire’s laundry-center manual has a code for this complaint, E53, motor stopped in the middle of a cycle: the protector opened, the load was too heavy, or the wiring. It checks the power supply, the load size and whether the empty drum turns freely, and warns that the protector may take 30 minutes to reset. Samsung’s list for “runs a few minutes and then stops” adds lint around the drive motor, low voltage and a jammed blower impeller. If the dryer also squeaks, grinds or rubs, Electrolux says to stop using it: that can be a sign of mechanical breakdown that leads to fire or serious injury.

3. It stops when the door is bumped

The drum stops whenever the door switch opens — by design. If a bump stops it mid-cycle, either the door is not holding the switch firmly — LG’s motor test starts by checking that the door frame presses the switch knob — or the switch or its wiring is dropping out. On Samsung’s Flex dryers, a door signal that is invalid for more than 256 milliseconds, about a quarter of a second, is enough to set dF. GE’s fault table for one gas dryer even lists “door latch lost in run,” noting that a power brownout can cause it during normal operation.

4. It stops and shows a code

Note the exact code and model number before resetting anything; full brand charts are in our repair guides hub.

Code Brand What the manual says
dC, dE, dO Samsung Door open: close it and restart
dF Samsung Door switch, its wiring or the control board
hE, HC, tE3, tC5 Samsung Overheat or vent error: restricted vent, clogged lint screen or a temperature sensor
dE LG Door opened or not fully closed, a faulty door lock or the main board
tE LG Heating-system fault; the dryer stops to prevent further damage
PS, PF, nP LG Power: cord wiring, blown fuse, tripped breaker or outage
E53 Frigidaire laundry center Motor stopped in the middle of a cycle
E65 Frigidaire laundry center High-limit thermostat tripping too often; exhaust checked first
Power failure Whirlpool, Maytag Power dropped during the cycle; restart it

5. The cycle ends early and the clothes are still damp

Sensor cycles end when the metal sensor bars near the front of the drum stop reading moisture. LG’s laundry-center manual names four reasons that happens too soon: the dryer is not level, so clothes miss the sensors; dryer-sheet chemicals coat them (LG advises against sheets); a small load never brushes them, so add a few items or use a timed cycle; or the sensor is dirty, and LG wipes it with a clean cloth. Whirlpool’s chart checks the dry-level setting and a full lint screen or clogged heater vent before the sensor itself. Residue on the lint screen can end a cycle early too — see dryer takes too long.

6. Gas dryers: the drum turns but the flame goes out

Some of it is normal. GE’s burner cycles on and off to hold temperature and shuts off for cool-down while the drum turns; after a momentary power failure, its gas valve waits about 30 seconds for the flame detector to cool and reset before relighting. Not normal: in GE’s gas chart, a short burn — the gas valve closing after about 1 to 2 minutes — points to an excessive or restricted exhaust and the safety and backup thermostats. Samsung adds flame-sensor contacts opening early, a weak gas valve coil that cuts out at higher temperatures, a weak high-limit, poor venting and bad drum seals. If the burner never lights, see dryer not heating; LG shows gAS when the gas valve is closed. If you smell gas, the manuals say to touch no electrical switches, clear the building and call the gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone.

What you can safely check before you call

Clean the lint screen; Whirlpool-built manuals warn that running a dryer with it loose, damaged, blocked or missing can cause overheating. After 5 to 10 minutes of running, hold a hand under the outside exhaust hood and feel for air movement. Samsung adds that the hood must open and close freely — in a Colorado winter, that means no snow or ice holding the flap shut. Check the vent chart in your installation instructions: LG’s allows 65 feet of 4-inch rigid metal duct with its recommended wall cap and no elbows, but only 28 feet with four. Use no plastic or foil vent, and do not push the dryer back so far that it kinks the duct. Close the door firmly, dry one wash load at a time, and on a gas dryer confirm the supply valve is open. Frigidaire’s installation warning sums up why: exceeding the chart lets lint accumulate, and plugging the system could create a fire hazard.

Why a restart is only half a fix

A dryer that runs again after it cools has not repaired itself; whatever tripped the safety is still there. Frigidaire’s control even counts high-limit trips and sets E65 when there are too many. We check airflow, the heat safeties, the motor and the door circuit, quote the actual repair, and the diagnostic fee is credited toward it. Thermostats, fuses, door switches, sensors and motors are routine parts, and a new dryer on a restricted vent would face the same restriction.

FAQ

Why does my dryer stop after a few minutes and then work again later?

Usually a safety that resets once it cools. Restricted airflow can trip a heat safety that also stops the motor on some models, and the drive motor has its own thermal protector that trips on heavy loads, a drum that does not turn freely or low voltage. Frigidaire notes its motor protector may take 30 minutes to reset.

Can a clogged dryer vent make the dryer shut off?

Yes. Heat safeties rely on airflow, and on some GE and LG models the safety that trips also stops the motor until it cools. Many dryers flag the vent first, such as Samsung hE or tE3, LG d75 to d95 and Frigidaire E65, so clean the lint screen and have the exhaust checked.

Why does my dryer shut off before the clothes are dry?

On sensor cycles it ends when the moisture sensor bars stop reading moisture. Dryer-sheet residue on the bars, a dryer that is not level, a very small load or a low dry-level setting can end it early, and LG says to wipe the sensor with a clean cloth. If loads stay damp after that, the sensor or the control needs testing.

Why does the flame in my gas dryer keep going out?

Some cycling is normal: the burner turns on and off to hold temperature, and the GE gas valve waits about 30 seconds to relight after a brief power failure. A flame that dies after a minute or two points to a restricted exhaust, a safety thermostat, or a weak gas valve coil or flame sensor. If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas supplier from a phone outside it.
