Ice Machine Error Codes: Hoshizaki Beeps & Manitowoc E01–E04 Explained

A commercial ice machine rarely dies quietly. Long before the bin is empty on a Friday night, the machine is usually telling you exactly what’s wrong — Hoshizaki units beep it out loud, Manitowoc models spell it out on the display. Hoshizaki KM-series: count the beeps

Hoshizaki’s KM machines signal faults with a repeating beep pattern. Count the beeps between pauses:

  • 1 beep — high temperature at the evaporator outlet (thermistor reading 127°F+). Often a dirty condenser or a refrigerant-side problem.
  • 2 beeps — harvest didn’t finish within 20 minutes, two cycles in a row. Classic sign of scale on the evaporator or a weak hot-gas valve.
  • 3 beeps — two elongated freeze cycles in a row; the machine shuts down to protect itself. Low water flow, scale, or refrigerant issues.
  • 4 / 5 beeps — bin control circuit shorted (4) or open (5). Usually the bin switch or its harness, not the “brain.”
  • 6 beeps — incoming voltage dropped below spec; the board shuts the unit down. Check the circuit before blaming the machine.
  • 9 beeps — bin-full protection tripped via the proximity switch.

Manitowoc Indigo / Indigo NXT: read the display

  • E01 — Long freeze cycle. The batch didn’t freeze in time (35 min on Indigo). The #1 cause is mineral scale insulating the evaporator plates.
  • E02 — Long harvest cycle. Ice won’t release within ~3.5–7 minutes. Scale again, or a harvest-assist/hot-gas problem.
  • E03 — Power loss event. The machine logged an outage; if it repeats with no outage, suspect the supply circuit.
  • E04 — High condenser temperature. Dirty condenser coil, blocked airflow, or a failing fan — the machine is overheating itself.

What the codes have in common

Notice the pattern: the majority of real-world ice machine alarms trace back to two boring causes — mineral scale and dirty condensers. Denver’s hard water accelerates both. What you can safely do yourself

  1. Power-cycle once. One clean restart clears a stale event; if the code returns, stop restarting — the machine is protecting itself.
  2. Look at the condenser. If the coil is furred with dust and grease, a careful brush/vacuum may drop temps enough to finish the day.
  3. Check water supply. Valve open, filter not clogged, decent pressure.
  4. Don’t acid-clean blind. Descaling with the wrong chemical or with nickel-plated evaporators can destroy the plates — that’s a repair-vs-replace mistake in a bottle.
