dE on an LG washer is the machine refusing to run until it’s sure the door is locked. The control board can’t confirm the door-lock circuit, so it stops the cycle before any water moves — a safety interlock, not a random glitch. On newer LG models the same fault shows as dE1 (door-lock switch) or dE2 (door-open detected during a cycle). It’s a common code, and often a very repairable one — but it isn’t something you clear by pressing start again.
What you’ll notice
- The washer fills the door but won’t start — the cycle ends almost immediately with dE (or dE1/dE2) on the display.
- You hear the door lock trying to engage — a click or buzz — then the error, or no sound at all.
- The door may stay locked shut after the fault, or feel like it never latched firmly in the first place.
- On a mid-cycle dE2, the machine stops partway through as if the door “opened,” even though it’s shut.
What dE actually means — and the one thing worth checking
LG uses dE for a failure in the door-lock circuit: the board sends the lock command but never gets the confirmation signal back. There is exactly one thing worth checking yourself before you call anyone — make sure the door is pushed firmly closed and nothing (a bunched towel, a strap, a coin) is caught between the door and the gasket, keeping the latch from seating. If the door is clean and fully shut and dE still shows, the checking stops there: the problem is inside the lock or the circuit that reports it.
Why dE isn’t a reset-and-go fix
When the door is genuinely shut and the code persists, dE almost always traces to the door-lock switch assembly — the electric latch that physically bolts the door and tells the board it’s secure. These wear out: the latch mechanism cracks, or the internal switch stops confirming. Less often, it’s the wiring harness between the lock and the main board, or the main control board itself misreading the signal. dE1 usually points at the lock switch; dE2 (door detected open mid-cycle) more often means an intermittent connection or a board reading the lock as failing under vibration. None of these are fixed by unplugging the washer for ten minutes — a reset clears the display, but the code comes back the next time the door is asked to lock, because the part that failed is still failed.
Repair or replace?
Almost always repair. The door-lock assembly is a defined, replaceable part, and swapping it — or repairing a harness — is a fraction of the cost of a new machine. A dE code on an otherwise-healthy LG is one of the better outcomes you can get from an error code: the drum, motor, and bearings are usually untouched. Replacement only enters the conversation if the washer is already old and stacking other failures alongside the door error.
