The cycle finishes and the laundry is still dripping. Or the washer gets to the spin step, hums, tries, and gives up. “Won’t spin” is one symptom with five different causes, and the fix ranges from nothing to a motor. Here is how we separate them on Denver Metro service calls — and which versions you can safely rule out from the laundry room.
1. It did not drain first
Every washer refuses to spin with water in the tub; it is a safety rule, not a fault. If there is standing water, the problem is drain, not spin — a clogged pump filter, a blocked hose, or a tired drain pump. Most error codes that look like spin problems are drain codes underneath. See washer won’t drain before reading further.
2. The load is unbalanced — or the suspension is
A single heavy item on one side makes the control abort the spin to protect the machine. If redistributing the load fixes it once and it never returns, it was the load. If it returns on ordinary loads, the suspension is the story: worn rods on a top-loader, tired shocks or dampers on a front-loader. The drum sways where it used to stay centered, every spin reads as unbalanced, and the washer learns to stop. LG shows this as UE, Samsung as UE/UB. Suspension is a mechanical repair, not a usage habit.
3. The lid or door is not confirming closed
Top-loaders will agitate but not spin when the lid switch or lid lock cannot confirm the lid is down. Front-loaders will not start at all. A lid lock that clicks but does not latch, a worn strike, or the switch’s electronics all produce the same “everything but spin” behavior. This is one of the more affordable parts on the list.
4. The drive is slipping — belt, coupler or clutch
Older top-loaders drive the basket through a belt, a motor coupler or a clutch, and all three wear. The telltale is a motor that runs (you hear it) while the basket barely moves or moves then stalls under load. A burning rubber smell on belt-driven models is the belt. These are routine repairs when caught before the motor overheats.
5. Motor or control
Direct-drive front-loaders have no belt or clutch; the drum sits on the motor. When they will not spin without a drain, balance or door reason, the motor, its hall sensor, a connector or the control board is involved. Those are the expensive branches, and they look identical from the outside — which is why the first four get ruled out first.
Why we don’t recommend guessing parts
A lid switch is a fraction of a motor’s price; a drain clog is free once cleared. We work the list in order with a meter, quote the actual repair, and the diagnostic fee is credited toward it. If it is a load issue, we will tell you so on the phone.
Repair or replace?
Lid locks, belts, couplers, pumps and suspension are all worth repairing on a washer under ten years old. A motor or board on a machine past that age, or a second major repair within a year, is where we have the replacement conversation honestly.

FAQ
My washer agitates but will not spin. What is it?
On a top-loader that pattern usually means the lid switch or lid lock cannot confirm the lid is closed, or the drive (belt, coupler, clutch) is slipping. The motor runs; the basket does not.
The washer spins if I rearrange the clothes. Is it broken?
If it happens once with one heavy item, no. If it happens on ordinary loads, the suspension (rods, shocks, dampers) is worn and the washer is correctly refusing to spin an unstable drum.
Is a washer that will not spin the same as one that will not drain?
Often yes. Washers refuse to spin with water in the tub, so a drain problem shows up as a spin problem. Check for standing water first.
How much does a spin repair cost?
It depends on which of the five causes it is: a cleared clog or a lid lock is modest, suspension is mid-range, a motor or board is the expensive end. We diagnose first and credit the fee toward the repair.
