Kenmore Model Number Guide: Who Really Built Your Appliance

Kenmore does not build appliances. Sears sourced every Kenmore washer, dryer, fridge, dishwasher and range from another manufacturer, and the first three digits of the model number tell you which one. That matters for two practical reasons: the error codes on your Kenmore are the codes of the company that built it, and the parts are that company’s parts. Below are the prefixes we see most often on Denver Metro service calls and where to read the codes for each.

How to read the prefix

Find the model tag — inside the washer lid or door, on the fridge’s interior wall, on the dishwasher door edge, under the range’s drawer. The model reads like 110.12345678: the three digits before the dot are the manufacturer prefix. Only the prefix tells you the maker; the rest describes the specific unit.

110 / 106 / 665 — Whirlpool

110 is Whirlpool laundry: top-load and front-load washers and dryers. 106 is Whirlpool refrigeration. 665 is Whirlpool (and KitchenAid-platform) dishwashers. If your Kenmore carries one of these, read our Whirlpool washer codes, Whirlpool dryer codes, Whirlpool fridge codes or Whirlpool dishwasher codes guides — the displays and fault logic are the same.

253 / 417 / 790 / 587 — Frigidaire (Electrolux)

253 is Frigidaire refrigeration (historically the Gibson line). 417 is Frigidaire laundry (the Kelvinator line) — many Kenmore front-loaders from the 2000s are 417s and behave exactly like an Electrolux or Frigidaire. 790 is Frigidaire ranges and ovens. 587 is Frigidaire dishwashers, built by Design & Manufacturing before Frigidaire absorbed it. Code guides: Frigidaire fridge, Frigidaire washer, Electrolux washer, Frigidaire dishwasher.

795 / 796 — LG

795 is LG refrigeration — the French-door Kenmore Elite units with the linear compressor are 795s, and they share LG’s compressor history. 796 is LG laundry. Read our LG fridge codes, LG washer codes and LG dryer codes guides.

363 — GE

363 is GE ranges and ovens. The GE oven codes guide applies.

Why the prefix matters for repair

A water filter for a 795 will never fit a 106. A control board for a 417 washer is an Electrolux part number, not a Whirlpool one. When you call with the prefix in hand, we arrive with the right diagnostic flow and the right parts. Without it, a Kenmore is an unknown until the technician reads the tag — which costs time on the visit. Tell the dispatcher the three digits before the dot; it is the single most useful thing you can read off a Kenmore.

FAQ

Who makes Kenmore appliances?

Nobody named Kenmore. Sears sourced them from Whirlpool, Frigidaire/Electrolux, LG, GE and others. The first three digits of the model number identify the actual manufacturer.

Where is the Kenmore model number?

On a tag inside the washer lid or door, on the fridge interior wall, on the dishwasher door edge, or under the range drawer. The format is three digits, a dot, then more digits.

My Kenmore is a 795. Which error codes apply?

795 is LG refrigeration, so LG fridge codes apply and the parts are LG parts, including the linear compressor.

Can you still get parts for Kenmore?

Yes. Parts are sourced from the original manufacturer by prefix. Availability is the same as for that brand’s own models of the same age.
