Manitowoc Indigo NXT Ice Machine Error Codes: How to Read the Alert Log

Manitowoc’s Indigo NXT cubers, the touchscreen ice machines in restaurants, bars, senior living and facility kitchens, keep an alert log instead of a blinking light. Each entry is a code from E01 to E38 with a short screen name, such as Long Freeze. The meanings below come from Manitowoc’s 2022 Indigo NXT technician’s handbooks (air, water and remote condenser models, and QuietQube) and the NXT owner’s manual. Model numbers look like IYT0500A or, for QuietQube, IYT1200C. For Hoshizaki and the wider picture, see our Hoshizaki and Manitowoc codes guide.

Alerts, messages and service faults

The alert icon, with a count, opens the alert log, where codes are viewed and reset. The message icon holds maintenance reminders (de-scale and sanitize, air filter, water filter, LuminIce bulb), not faults. Service faults are the two codes built to stop the machine before a major component fails, E01 Long Freeze and E02 Long Harvest; Manitowoc notes the cause is most often minor or outside the machine.

After a service fault stops the machine, a green power button appears. The owner’s manual restart: press power (the screen reads Off), press it again (Making Ice), and it restarts after a short delay. If it stops again, call for service. Manitowoc allows this restart only three times in 24 hours.

Read the alert log before you call

Tap the alert icon and photograph each entry: code, name and time. Skip Reset Defaults, which erases your programmed settings, and stay out of Diagnostics. The service menu keeps five days of shortest and longest cycles, so tell us when trouble shows up: overnight, weekends, after closing.

Indigo NXT alert codes, grouped

Freeze, harvest, water, bin Meaning
E01 Long Freeze A freeze hit the 35-minute limit, forcing a harvest; three in a row stop the machine.
E02 Long Harvest The curtain did not open within the 7-minute harvest, so a thaw cycle ran; three in a row stop it.
E20 WTR Fault Water level probe readings do not fit the cycle, or the evaporator outlet is below -10°F seven minutes into freeze.
E12 Curtain Fault At bin full for over 24 hours: curtain switch open or curtain off.
E25 Bin Probe Fault Optional bin level probe out of range for 10 minutes.
E28 iAuCS Automatic cleaning accessory selected but not detected.
Refrigeration and heat Meaning
E04 Hi cnd Temp or Wtr Cnd Fault Liquid line too hot: air-cooled or water-cooled condenser fault.
E05 HPC Fault The high-pressure cutout opened.
E07 Starving TXV, E08 TXV Fault Evaporator inlet and outlet over 12°F apart at the end of freeze: the expansion valve, or for E07 a low charge.
E09 Flood Evap1, E10 Flood Evap2 Discharge line too cool early in freeze: a flooding evaporator.
E11 Refrig Fault By two minutes into freeze, the discharge line did not warm 10°F and the evaporator did not cool 10°F.
E15 Low liq temp Liquid line under 60°F for over a minute: a fan cycle control fault.
E16 Rmt Cnd Fault QuietQube CVD only: liquid line under 40°F or over 140°F for over a minute.
Sensors, power, controls Meaning
E19 ITP Fault Ice thickness probe unplugged, or a microphone problem.
E21 to E24 (T1 to T4) A refrigeration temperature sensor out of range during prechill.
E26, E27 T6 or T7 Fault Incoming water (T6) or ambient air (T7) sensor out of range.
E31 Safe Mode Running on model data and history after a probe failure.
E03 Power Loss Power was interrupted; logged on power-up.
E29 USB COMM, E30 USB DNLD USB drive missing or defective.
E32 RS485 COMM Device on the RS485 port not communicating with the gateway.
E33 Keyboard, E34 Display Touchscreen unplugged from the control board, or faulty.
E36 Checksum, E37 WatchDog, E38 UI Comm Log only: power loss, possible electrical noise, a loose cable.

Older Indigo, not NXT? That model has a four-line text display, and its manual lists two safety limits instead, SL1 (long freeze) and SL2 (long harvest), shown by a flashing control board light.

What the machine does on its own

Thaw cycle. If the curtain stays closed through a 7-minute harvest, the compressor stops and water cycles for about an hour before it freezes again, so a machine moving water but making no ice may be mid-thaw.

Safe Mode (E31). If the ice thickness probe (E19) or water level probe (E20) fails, the machine keeps making ice for up to 72 hours, then goes to standby and turns off.

Other automatic limits. The high-pressure cutout resets itself, and the board retries every 10 minutes while it stays open. A failed water level probe cannot keep the fill running: the board closes the inlet valve once it has run 12.5 to 18 continuous minutes, depending on model and cycle. Ice holding the curtain open for 30 seconds is a normal full-bin shutoff; the machine restarts once the curtain closes and a 3-minute delay passes. An orange-ringed Machine Off button means a Time, Weight or Night Off ice program stopped it.

What staff can check safely

Water. Confirm the water service valve is open and the filter is not overdue; Manitowoc’s long-freeze checklists include a plugged filter and low water pressure. The handbook’s examples of intermittent long freezes include a cold room at night and water shut off one night a week.

Air. Nothing stacked in front of the machine or blocking airflow around it, and room air between 35°F and 110°F at the ice-making head. On self-contained air-cooled models, wash the air filter monthly with mild soap and water, with power disconnected at the service switch; the condenser fins behind it are sharp.

Curtain and bin. The curtain or ice dampers must be in place and swinging freely, or the machine will not start. Never pry a stuck slab off the evaporator.

When to stop and call

Call when E01 or E02 returns after a restart, when E04 or E05 repeats with a clean filter and clear airflow, and for E07 to E11, E15 or E16, the refrigeration-system faults. Some NXT models hold up to 150 grams of R290 (propane), and Manitowoc limits work on them to technicians trained in flammable refrigerants. Book E19, E20 or E31 inside the 72-hour Safe Mode window. If water keeps entering the trough with the machine off, the owner’s manual points to the inlet valve: close the water supply to the machine and call.

Denver water, scale and the six-month rule

Manitowoc requires de-scaling and sanitizing at least every six months, with only its approved de-scaler and sanitizer, never mixed. Dirt and scale show up as codes: a dirty water level probe is on the E01 list, a dirty evaporator on the E02 list, and a dirty ice thickness probe can stop harvest. Water hardness varies across Denver-area neighborhoods, so the same model can need different intervals at different locations. Set the Clean Reminder to match, or put it on a preventive maintenance schedule; if six months is not enough, Manitowoc says to have the water tested and treated.

Why we don’t guess parts

Manitowoc warns that water problems often mimic refrigeration failures and tells technicians to rule out water, electrical and external causes before replacing refrigeration parts. We read the log and history, test live, quote the actual repair and credit the diagnostic fee toward it. Refrigerant work is done by EPA-608 certified technicians.

FAQ

What does E01 Long Freeze mean on a Manitowoc ice machine?

On an Indigo NXT, a freeze cycle reached its 35-minute maximum and the control forced a harvest; three in a row stop the machine and bring up a green power button. Manitowoc’s checklist starts with installation and water causes, such as a dirty condenser, low water pressure or a dirty water level probe, before electrical and refrigeration parts.

How do I restart a Manitowoc Indigo NXT after a service fault?

Press the power button so the screen reads Off, then press it again for Making Ice, or tap the green power button; the machine restarts after a short delay. Manitowoc allows this only three times in 24 hours, and a machine that stops again needs service.

What is Safe Mode on a Manitowoc Indigo NXT?

Safe Mode, logged as E31, lets the machine keep making ice for up to 72 hours after the ice thickness probe or water level probe fails, running on model data and its own cycle history. After 72 hours it goes to standby and shuts off, so book service when the alert first appears.

How often should a Manitowoc ice machine be de-scaled and sanitized?

Manitowoc calls for de-scaling and sanitizing at least every six months, using only Manitowoc-approved de-scaler and sanitizer, never mixed. If a machine needs it more often, have the water tested and treated, and on self-contained air-cooled models wash the air filter monthly.
