Frigidaire refrigerators use short two-part codes — and unlike a lot of appliance errors, most of them point at exactly one failed component. That’s good news for repair cost, and bad news for the “unplug it and hope” strategy. Here are the codes we see most in Denver kitchens, ranked roughly by how fast they put your food at risk.
H1 (or a flashing high temperature) — the box is running warm
H1 means the compartment is above its target — the refrigerator equivalent of a fever. After a big grocery load or a door left ajar it can be innocent and will clear as things settle. An H1 that persists or returns daily means the cooling side is losing: a condenser coil furred with dust, a failing evaporator fan, an iced coil from a defrost fault, or a refrigerant issue. That’s the same suspect list we walk through in the fridge-not-cooling guide — and it deserves a diagnosis while the food is still cold.
SY EF — evaporator fan failure
The most common serious Frigidaire code: the control board has lost the evaporator fan — the fan that actually moves cold air into the compartments. A fridge can hum along convincingly with a dead evaporator fan while temperatures quietly climb, because the compressor still runs. SY EF is a defined, same-visit repair with a genuine fan assembly; ignoring it is how a $250 repair becomes a load of spoiled groceries and an overworked compressor.
SY CE — communication error
The display board and the main control board have stopped talking. Occasionally that’s a connector reseated in five minutes; more often it’s a failing board on one end of the conversation. The machine’s behavior can get strange — wrong temps shown, controls unresponsive — and guessing which board is at fault by swapping parts is the expensive way to find out. A meter and the service data settle it in one visit.
OP and SH — sensor open / shorted
Frigidaire’s thermistor codes: OP means a temperature sensor circuit is open (broken), SH means shorted. Either way the board has lost a thermometer, falls back to timed guesswork, and temperatures swing wider than the display admits — the same fallback behavior we described on Whirlpool’s sensor codes. Sensors are inexpensive, defined parts; the diagnosis is confirming sensor vs. wiring vs. board input.
dF or a freezer turning into a glacier — defrost faults
A defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or control fault lets frost build until the evaporator chokes — and the fridge side warms first, because the shared coil can’t breathe. If you see heavy frost in the freezer AND a warm fresh-food side, that’s the pattern. Left alone it ends at the same place every time: an iced-solid coil and a warm box on a Saturday.
Why a returning code isn’t a reset-and-go fix
Power-cycling clears the display, not the component. A code that comes back is the machine repeating itself — and a refrigerator is the one appliance where waiting has a daily grocery bill. If the compressor itself turns out to be the patient, that’s sealed-system territory, and we’ll give you the honest repair-or-replace math before any big-ticket work.

SY EF is showing but the fridge still feels cold. How long do I have?
Hours to a day or two, not weeks — residual cold and the freezer’s thermal mass mask the failure at first. The compartments will drift up as the stored cold runs out. Move what you can to a cooler if the fresh-food side passes 41°F, and get the fan replaced before the weekend gets expensive.
My Frigidaire beeps and flashes H1 after every grocery run. Normal?
Once in a while, yes — a warm load raises the compartment temperature and the alarm does its job. Every time, no: that pattern usually means the cooling system has no headroom left, typically from a dusty condenser coil or a tired fan. A maintenance-level visit now beats a no-cool call later.
Do these codes apply to my Electrolux refrigerator too?
